hotplug error message at boot time

In the very early stages of booting, /etc/hotplug.d/default/default.hotplug
references /dev/null, which results in a series of "device does not exist"
errors. Did I configure something wrong? The node /dev/null exists; does
something need to be configured in the kernel for the device to exist before
udev goes to work? Or are the bootscripts out of order somehow?
