If that "interesting" sed line is still required (even with the patches you 
provided), I would suggest using perl for the substitution task to simplify 
things. The syntax is very similar to sed. See how the command you provided is 
done with perl: 
perl -pi -e 's@ /lib/ld-linux.so.2@ /tools/lib/ld-linux.so.2 at g;' \ 
	-e 's@\*startfile_prefix_spec:\n@$_/tools/lib/@g;' \ 
	`gcc --print-file specs` 
The "-p" option is what makes perl behave like sed.
