Ian, you need to revisit your history.  The PC was intended from the
beginning to be an open architecture system.  It was a novel marketing
approach for IBM and for anyone else really.  IBM was desparate and
neededd to do something, anything that no one else was doing. Later they
tried to close it with Micro Channel Architecture bus (MCA).  MCA was a
flop.
