the PATH environment variable tell the shell were to look
for executable programs.

i.e. if your PATH='/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin'

when you type startx<RETURN>

the shell will look in the /bin then /usr/bin then
/usr/X11R6/bin to find the startx program
