unable to open an initial console

I just tried installing my linux system using linux from scratch (using version
2.3.6 of the docs, on an i486), but when I boot I get the message "Warning:
unable to open an initial console" and then booting stops. What does the
message mean and how can I fix it?

VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly
Freeing unused kernel memory: 65k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
