I'm running XFree86 4.0.1 on 2.2.16 (with USB back-patch). The XFree
compilation just worked. I didn't bother trying to change anything in the
setup/Makefiles, it compiled out of the box. It's been working perfectly
since. One day, I'll go back and change the -O2's to -O3's...
