I found this in freshmeat:

e2compr is a kernel patch and utility set to compress files
transparently, using GZIP/BZIP2/LZV/LZO for compression. You don't have
to recompile or write new apps to use it, but you'll have to get the
e2fsprogs version for e2c to use e2fsck and other fs utils.
