Does the script /etc/init.d/mountfs exist? the rest of the system will
have problems, if this script isn't run on bootup (aka it remounts your
root partition as read-write, creation of /etc/mtab, etcetc)

I would also look into the ext2fs_check_if_mount problem..i haven't seen
that before....
