boot disk problem

This would be a good time to try out GRUB (see the appropriate LFS hint).
You can get a GRUB boot disk at

ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/grub/grub-0.5.96-i386-pc.ext2fs 

Just dd it to a floppy.

GRUB has a command line so you can interactively figure out how to boot 
the system.
