This problem used to appear a lot in the past when gcc wasn't installed 
properly (at one time the instructions in the book were wrong causing gcc to 
compile this way).

ok run this please:
cpp --verbose

Also, you may want to reinstall GCC, just try it. It wouldn't hurt anyways. 
Try to copy & paste the instructions from the 2.4.3 book instead of typing 
them out manually.
