Can't get past Bzip2

One little thing though:
If you look at bzip2's Makefile you will see: CC=gcc

Your entire problem could be related to an incorrect $PATH
Normal packages with a configure script figure out where gcc resides (it's 
full path)

Try this:
edit bzip2's Makefile, find CC=gcc and change it to: CC=/usr/bin/gcc
and see if that makes a difference
