Hmm... maybe there are patch(1)es out there that detect .gz
files. Probably not the vanilla patch(1). The correct command would
hence be

gunzip -c ../gzip-1.2.4a.patch.gz | patch -Np1

It is generally a good idea to keep the zipped source-files intact for
later use.
