final hurdle -- boot-up problem

Thanks to Jean-François and Gerard to help me spot the errors.

There are still more boot errors and, after looking through the
symlinks, I still can't find them.

This is what I got:

INIT: version 2.78 booting
/etc/rcS.d/S03localnet: xmalloc: cannot allocate 8 bytes (0 bytes allocated)
Activating swap.........<etc> [OK]
Checking file systems
   <etc> [OK]
Remounting root file systyem in read-write mode [OK]
Mounting other file systems [OK]
Setting clock [OK]
Loading keymap <etc> [OK]
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
Starting system log daemon.... [OK]
Starting kernel log daemon.. [OK]
(none) login:

Entering "root" and "mypassword" get me back to the same spot. I can't
get in. (btw, I may be using the wrong root password in trying to enter the
system.
If this is the case, is there a remedy? I'm not sure what the root password
is,
if it does exist)

TIA
Shagggy
