problem in chapter 6: entering chroot'ed environment

That does look very much like a Glibc problem. You said you created the
/etc/nsswitch.conf file, right?

Try recompiling Glibc in chroot and recompile, after you did Glibc,
fileutils and sh-utils as well. In fact, reinstall all the static
programs right away and then follow the book in chapter6.
