"generally" everyone (or the book assumes) that your compiling all
software from $LFS/usr/src

so.. your structure would be like this

$LFS/usr/src/glibc-2.1.3
$LFS/usr/src/glibc-2.1.3/crypt
$LFS/usr/src/glibc-2.1.3/linuxthreads_db

where $LFS/usr/src can change... doens't matter much

tar zxf glibc-2.1.3.tar.gz
cd glibc-2.1.3
tar zxf glibc-linuxthreads-2.1.3.tar.gz
tar zxf glibc-crypt-2.1.3.tar.gz

That should cover it...
