I doubt it could work. _make_ doesn't understand --<blah>.
--<blah> gets expanded in M4 macros by configure, and in the Makefiles (
which produced from Makefile(s).in ) you won't see this stuff. Look in your
Makefile(s).
so
prefix=$LFS/usr make -e install
seems appropriate.
