That's not really up to the book. Also, have you tried the newest shadow
password suite? The book still uses the one released in 1999, but a newer
version has been released last August (2.5.1 will be using it). Perhaps those
docs are more up to date?
Also, try http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/cgi-bin/htsearch
and search on "shadow MD5" and you'll be able to read some emails on this
