path

Create a .profile for yourself, and then add a line like this:

export PATH=$PATH:/newdir1:/newdir2

the $PATH will take everything in your current path, and then add /newdir1
and /newdir2 to it. I am pretty sure that bash (the 'preferred' linux
shell) uses .bash_profile as opposed to .profile.
