Does deja archive these mailing lists? that's usually the best play to
search for errors...

Interesting, what distro are you using? i would try compiling grep w/o
the CPPFLAGS modified.

so; ./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-nls

Usually the problem is that Glibc allready definites re_max_failures
(though if your using something like Debian with a 2.0 glibc....) and
grep also does so we change it to re_max_failures2 to get rid of some
compilation errors, etc...
