mountfs doesn't execute!!

i almost have my first LFS system running ... no problems compiling any of
the software, but on bootup i get these messages:

INIT: version 2.78 booting
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
Starting system log daemon ... can't create lock file /etc/mtab~12:
Read-only file system (use -n flag to override)
pidof: mount returned not-zero exit status
pidof: /proc not mounted, failed to mount

it just stops there. it looks like the mountfs script didn't even run. i
got the bootscripts from the bootscripts-2.4.3.tar file so i assume they are
ok. i checked the file permissions of all the scripts, i checked the
symlinks, they are ok. also, i checked that the proc file system was
installed in the kernel. does anyone have any other ideas why this happens??

thanks in advance
Mike Smith
