Have you considered MPEG4 encoding?  It's good enough to fit an entire 
DVD movie onto a CD without a noticeable difference in quality.  Tom's 
Hardware has a guide to it on http://www.tomshardware.com .  I'm not 
sure if there is enough software for Linux yet.
