hdparm has a built in read test - hdparm -t /dev/hdx.
There is a benchmark called bonnie that may be usefull but I have never used it.
A simple test like cp -a dir1 dir2 clearly shows the difference on
my system when dir1 is big. You can easily write your own test with a small c 
program - just make sure you use sync() before taking your final timings.
