AFAIK there are default values for CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, etc. when using autoconf
- generated configure. It is kept somewhere in autoconf stuff under
../share/..
For my system it is "-g -O2". I am not interested in debugging everything
too. So, for some packages I use
CFLAGS="-O6 -march=i586" ./configure <........................>,
for others
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i586" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i586" ./configure
<........................>,
etc.

So, what's the problem ?
