Now that you get me to think about it more; i forgot about this:
$ mkdir foo
$ cd foo/
$ touch ..bar
$ ls -d .[^\.]*
/bin/ls: .[^.]*: No such file or directory
$ # oops!
$ cd ..
$ rm -r foo
Such a simple thing.... Oh well....
for f in * .*; do [ "$f" != "." -a "$f" != ".." -a $f != "*" -a $f != ".*" ] && ls $f; done
ls -a . | egrep -v '^(\.|\.\.)$' | xargs ls -d
for f in `ls -a .`; do [ "$f" != "." -a "$f" != ".." ] && ls $f; done
