Problem compiling gettext using CVS built book

I'm currently building the latest LFS system from CVS (gcc 2.95.2.1,
glibc 2.2.1). When trying to compile gettext in chapter 5, I've get the
following error. I'm using LFS 2.4.3 as my normal system. Any suggestions?

bash-2.04# ./configure --prefix=$LFS/usr --disable-nls &&    cd src &&
make L
DFLAGS=-all-static msgfmt &&    cp msgfmt $LFS/usr/bin
