Not that I can see. Well, when the file is not present Glibc falls back
to sensible defaults which happen to be the same as the contents of that
nsswitch.conf file. Not having the file is therefore not something that
would break your system.

But the reason things fail when you do have the file may indicate that
your Glibc installation is faulty. You would do good to reinstall Glibc.
