Automating kernel configuration

Kernel configuration is stored in /usr/src/linux/.config -- just
copy this file away before doing a make mrproper, and copy it
there again before compiling or doing a make menuconfig. This
works across different kernel versions, but you should make sure
that you check manually for new kernel options before compiling.
