I've done the same a couple of days ago, and it works with kernel 2.2.18.
The only difference being that I compiled reiserfs support as module which
I suggest you should also try. Here's my 'proof':

  root:~# uname -a
  Linux Elf 2.2.18 #1 Sat Mar 10 13:12:25 CET 2001 i686 unknown

  root:~# modprobe reiserfs

  root:~# lsmod
  Module Size Used by
  reiserfs 130608 0 (unused)
  r128 143056 1 (initializing)
  rtl8139 11904 1 (autoclean)
  esssolo1 21152 0
  soundcore 2576 4 [esssolo1]
  ide-scsi 7520 0
  scsi_mod 38832 1 [ide-scsi]

  root:~# mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda8 /mnt/lfs

  root:~# df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
  /dev/hda7 3936724 1809688 1927032 48% /
  /dev/hda8 4000000 296012 3703988 7% /mnt/lfs

  root:~# ls /mnt/lfs
. .. bin boot dev etc home lib mnt opt proc root sbin tmp \
usr var

So, try as a module and tell us what happens.
