As you know, only files on the same filesystem can be hard linked.
Symlinks are the only choice for directories.  The beauty of LFS is
you can have it how you want it.

Personally, I like hard links in the init.d directories.  That's how it was 
on the AT&T, SCO, and Sun boxes I grew up on.
