The fact that the necessary information is not available for proprietary
operating systems.
If your default OS is MSDOS this actually works and you get the simplicity
you want. The KISS bootloader from BIOS+boot sector loads the "kernel"
directly and you can boot into Windows (9x) with and Linux with
