Hmm, that is not right. I think you misread the bug report. I just
compiled less-378 without the --sysconfdir and the first line is:-

gcc -I. -c -DBINDIR=\"/bin\" -DSYSDIR=\"/usr/etc\"  -g -O2 main.c

and the Makefile has:-

sysconfdir = ${prefix}/etc

We want the sysconfdir to be /etc hence why we must pass the configure
switch.
