I just heard back from the maintainer and he likes it for the new groff!

I was bit by the formating bug due to the use of .ll over LL on wide
terms with man-1.5k and groff 1.18.1

here's a patch that fixes it but I know more needs to be done to check
for the version of groff used, but here it is.

Yes, we need something that works both for old and for new groff,
and without checking groff either at compile or at run time.
