Glibc is one of the longer packages to install. The majority of your reference 
times will be like 0.0x or 0.x.

A better reference point would be an average sized package that takes an 
average amount of time to compile.

Of course that's near impossible to classify, but bash wasn't such a bad 
choice. binutils is only slightly larger and it does make sense to use the 
very first package in chapter 5 as the reference point.
