That's right; they're sent to the kernel ring buffer; klogd's
job is to send them to sysklog; otherwise they get sent to
the console.  If you don't want to run klogd, you could run
dmesg -n 1
at some point early in the bootscripts to quiet things down.

Eek, my slow p150 laptop takes 10 seconds from lilo to login;
five seconds is an eternity for doing nothing but sleep.
