make LDFLAGS="-all-static" error

In addition to the other things said here, if at all possible, get
Slackware 9.0 and build from there as a base.  It's use of glibc-2.3.x
instead of glibc-2.2.x that 8.0 uses will make your job a bit easier and
the result less likely to melt into slag.
