SBU's?

All,

I don't think we are there yet, but are we renaming SBU's to "Static
Binutils Units", since this is the first package we compile in CH5? I
found this thread from April 2003 talking about the name change -
http://archive.linuxfromscratch.org/mail-archives/lfs-dev/2003/04/0601.html

Just in case, here is some data on my test compiles of cvs version
20030603 for CH5's packages to help redo SBU's to the new package -
Binutils. I timed the configure and make statements. I did not time
any little things like mkdir, ln, cp etc. These take so little time, I
felt it was not necessary.

My test box is OLD...It is a Compaq Deskpro 6000 - PIIMMX 233MHz with
328MB RAM. So my numbers will be considerably longer than those who
have faster machines, but the ratios should still be valid.

Binutils 2.13.2 Pass 1 - 1.00 SBU = 891.72sec [geez that's slow :-)]
GCC 3.2.3 Pass 1 - 5.13 SBU (4577.64sec)
Linux 2.4.20 Headers - 0.01 SBU (7.64sec)
GLibc 2.3.2 - 13.09 SBU (11671.73sec)
TCL 8.4.2 - 0.51 SBU (455.01sec)
Expect 5.38 - 0.07 SBU (65.19sec)
DejaGNU 1.4.3 - 0.03 SBU (28.59sec)
GCC 3.2.3 Pass 2 - 12.29 SBU (10962.48sec)
Binutils 2.13.2 Pass 2 - 1.42 SBU (1264.99sec)
Gawk 3.1.2 - 0.17 SBU (154.97sec)
Coreutils 5.0 - 0.74 SBU (657.34sec)
Bzip2 1.0.2 - 0.04 SBU (38.37sec)
Gzip 1.3.5 - 0.05 SBU (41.07sec)
Diffutils 2.8.1 - 0.11 SBU (100.72sec)
Findutils 4.1.7 - 0.14 SBU (124.35sec)
Make 3.80 - 0.14 SBU (126.03sec)
Grep 2.5.1 - 0.11 SBU (95.98sec)
Sed 4.0.7 - 0.21 SBU (191.16sec)
Gettext 0.11.5 - 3.20 SBU (2852.54sec)
Ncurses 5.3 - 0.74 SBU (660.4sec)
Patch 2.5.4 - 0.04 SBU (38.28sec)
Tar 1.13.25 - 0.15 SBU (133.60sec)
Texinfo 4.5 - 0.19 SBU (173.72sec)
Bash 2.05b - 0.56 SBU (502.46sec)
Util-Linux 2.11z - 0.06 SBU (55.90sec)
Perl 5.8.0 - 0.92 SBU (817.73sec)

I ran all of these twice and too the average time. I would say that
there is a 2% margin of error on the longer packages and much less for
the smaller ones.

In case anyone cares, I had no issues compiling the toolchain and other
binaries in ch 5 from the steps provided. [Well, besides my own dumb
ones like typo's and not paying attention :-)]

On to ch 6 cvs.
