 Think I've found the solution in the alpha-glibc list archive :

touch /usr/include/assert.h

and yes, this won't be necessary if Pure LFS has already installed this
header.

 Forgot to mention that the perl-root and libnss patches apply
cleanly.  Building at the moment.
