I have upgraded the compiler and binutils (and glibc) yes, and
reinstalled them, but I always went by the book. But of course, I can
have made mistakes.

It is possible to fix the error above? Compile binutils, delete
/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/, then install binutils?
