I just built zlib-1.1.4 today and found that a static lib is not built 
when doing --shared and vice versa. So It does need to be built twice 
with the make clean in between. Also I did not need to specify the 
CFLAGS before the ./configure as --shared took care of that (at least it 
did for me).
