I'm not sure if other *sh accept this syntax but bash has arrays. this allows 
you to do something like:

SERVICE[0]=static
IP[0]=192.168.1.2
SERVICE[1]=static
IP[1]=192.168.1.5
SERVICE[2]=ipx
num[2]=123456

IMHO, it's still human-readable :)
