I found more information for supporting iproute2, that I would like to
share.

The iproute2 suite exposes all of the networking functionality of the linux
kernel where the venerable tools (ifconfig, route) are hamstrung by history.

Is using iproute2 in there network scripts, ifconfig is no longer being
used. I guess this has been true since version 6.x of Redhat.

PLD is also using iproute2.

SuSE is also using iproute2

So we would be following good company.
