I'm getting more confused by the minute.

co -P -r b5_1 LFS has chapter06/udev.xml in it (added by you)
co -P -r v5_1-pre2 LFS has chapter06/udev.xml in it (added by you)

co -P -r branch_point_5_1 LFS has newxml all but identical to newxml
prior to newxml going to HEAD.

This is starting to look more like a spider web than a tree structure.
Care to enlighten me?
