Bruce, I think I would definately look at some form of a port 25 block,
especially if you can SSH to belgarath but not access the SMTP port.
Blocking outgoing port 25 is becoming so widespread these days, it makes
it a pain for those of us who *LIKE* to run our own SMTP servers :)
