unecessary symlinks or bad scripts?

They are needed. In my build script I have
...
make install &&
ln -s ../usr/bin/cpp /lib &&
ln -s gcc /usr/bin/cc &&
cd .. &&
rm -rf gcc-3.4.4 &&
...and so on
