Yes, but why? This is the kind of debugging I'm talking about. We need to
understand the technical details here and identify the root cause. Once
the issue is understood, only then can we possibly figure out how to make
the build work. 

I've only just finished my round of ppc builds (recall that I'm currently
testing 5 toolchain combos on 3 arches - ugh, I must be insane). I plan to
start on x86_64 some time next week. Hopefully the problem is reproducible
on non-Debian setups.
