Syslinux does come with a boot loader that can boot Linux kernels from
ext2 filesystems, is actively maintained, and is thus a valid
candidate for inclusion in LFS, together with its dependency on nasm.
However, not everyone uses ext2/ext3, so it cannot be the only
candidate.
As for BLFS: my own opinion is that it contains after-the-first-reboot
steps, and installing a boot loader is not one of such steps. Even
more: various non_ext2-fsprogs don't actually belong there.
