For my BLFS edits, I'm using DESTDIR where possible - e.g. to check
the space when I already have a version installed, and to confirm
what will be installed. The two packages which have failed to respect
this in the past few days were cups-1.2 (use BUILDROOT= for where to
install it) and poppler-0.5 (no obvious workaround, I noted that
Mandriva uses rm -rf against the rpm buildroot before it starts the
build - for my purposes, a preliminary build with --prefix=/tmp/usr
worked fine, but then I'm the only physical user).
