my concern is not space.

i just like to have dynamic libs for security reasons. whenever i update
a package i know to have covered all dependent packages. now libcrypt in
sysvinit is one of the last static libraries i have in use. one of my
next projects is to check all packages for included libraries like
gettext or pcre.

mayor versions which break the compatibilty are a problem as you
mentionned. but usually you're not forced to but stay happy with the
next minor update.
