i use gcc-3.0.4 you MUST use glibc 2.2.5 though. I have had only one 
problem with glibc-2.2.5 and that was compile XFree86 4.2.0 but that was 
fixed by temperarily linking libdl.so.2 to my host system at a very 
later time.
