Well, I had the same problem, but the solution was, that the drivers 
were compiled as a module. At startup, they didn't load. So for me, a 
modprobe 8139too worked for me. Of course, you would have to choose the 
right driver. If the nic works (ping, you can add a line to 
alias eth0 <your nic driver>
